Beijing, May 21, 2011 – Sarah Reinertsen, a world recognized above-knee amputee athlete, participated and completed the 10K run in The Great Wall Marathon today, one of the most rewarding and culturally exhilarating courses held outside Beijing in Tianjin, China.
This is the first time a female above-knee amputee has participated in The Great Wall Marathon since it first started in 1999.

A sold out event with 2,000 participants, this year’s Marathon had a range of runners from young to old, coming from around the world to compete in the 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Full Marathon.
Sarah completed the 10K run, wearing a specially designed c-shaped carbon composite prosthetic foot, called the Flex-Run designed for long distance running by Össur.
The course proved even more challenging as the Great Wall had several sections of steep and unstable steps, making the course not only difficult for able-bodied runners, but also challenging for Sarah as she had to carefully navigate the uneven terrain accurately and on a prosthetic leg.
“I am thrilled to be in China and definitely consider the Great Wall to be one of my most challenging races to-date” said Sarah.
“There were some areas of the Wall where I needed to work a little harder, such as scaling some of the higher steps and coming down rough and unstable ground as well. I definitely would love to come back and do this race again.” Sarah was in Beijing to speak at the Beijing Disabled Sports and Vocational Training Center on May 20th where she met with officials from the China Disabled Persons Federation (CDPF), Beijing Disabled Persons Federation (BDPF), and several members of the disabled athletics team.
She shared stories about her life, growing up as young girl who had one leg, but with the desire to challenge herself.
She shared how she came to be an accomplished athlete and role model, and left the entire audience inspired to learn and do more with themselves.
“We are pleased that Sarah has accomplished another dream of hers.
